Description
Feed supplement rich in essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals for all phases of racehorse breeding.
It maximises the growth of colts and fillies and allows complete skeletal mineralisation with correct limb conformation and healthy joints. In broodmares, it guarantees correct foetal development and satisfies protein and mineral requirements that are far greater than normal due to lactation. It favours fertility in both broodmares and sires. It guarantees a rapid recovery of fertile oestrous cycles in mares that stop racing to “be put to foal”. It also improves gestation success and stimulates a plentiful onset of lactation after birth.
MARES AND STALLIONS
Aminofeed has been used as the only supplement to high-quality forage for stallions and mares for five years at the AUB National Institute of Artificial Insemination of the University of Bologna. In this period of time, 20 stallions were partly used during the breeding season to collect and ship chilled semen and partly sent to the centre for producing frozen semen.
The horses used for the breeding season usually arrive from various horse breeding farms in Northern Italy within the first two weeks of January with different feeding plans with respect to supplementation.
During the six months at the centre, their Body Condition Score (BCS) kept increasing by 1 point compared to their initial score, despite the intensive reproductive activities. The quality of the semen also improved, not only with respect to basic parameters (total number of collections, total and progressive motility, morphology) during sample taking, but also – and more importantly – in terms of better preservation due to the increased total and progressive motility (TM and PM). The horses used for producing frozen semen stayed at the centre for periods ranging from two weeks to three months and different times of the year. In horses that stayed for longer, the quality of the frozen semen benefited from the supplementation with Aminofeed in terms of TM and PM and sperm vitality after freezing and thawing.
Each year, during the period under consideration, the centre houses about 90 mares, most of which with a foal at foot, for artificial insemination with frozen semen. In all these mares arriving from all over Italy, the nutritional status and BCS remained unchanged, despite the stress due to the journey and change of environment. In many cases, especially in lactating mares, the nutritional status improved by 1 or 2 points. The correct and complete dietary intake, associated with effective reproduction management, has allowed for high fertility results in relation to the type of semen used.
Aminofeed is the ideal dietary supplement for horses, especially for those used for reproduction purposes.
GROWING YEARLINGS
A study was conducted on a group of 26 Thoroughbred yearlings fed with Aminofeed and monitored for approximately 10 months from the age of 8-9 months to 16-17 months. The main biometric parameters – height at withers, chest circumference, shin circumference, weight, and daily weight gain – were evaluated to assess the growth of the yearlings under examination. The yearlings underwent 8 biometric measurements at 30 to 35-day intervals.
The feeding plan of each foal included: 3-3.5 kg of grains (corn, barley, and oats), 6-7 kg of forage, and 0.5-1 kg of Aminofeed. At the end of the study, the weight and daily weight gain could be superimposed with the optimal growth ranges resulting from the thoroughbred charts. As for the skeletal ossification index, the yearlings showed values similar to those of adult horses.
The period between the foal and yearling stage is crucial for the physical and mental development of future athletes. Bad foal management during this stage can compromise its future competitive performance, as well as its health and wellbeing. That is why Aminofeed is the recommended complementary feed during this development stage.
